![]() ![]() State officials say they’re focusing on several key objectives: ![]() Gavin Newsom took a step forward in launching the state’s Extreme Heat Action Plan, which outlines “California’s all-of-government approach to mitigating the health, economic, cultural, ecological, and social impacts of increasing average temperatures and heat waves.” “The Times found that state leaders have ignored years of warnings from within their own agencies that heat was becoming more dangerous.” “Extreme heat did not suddenly become a threat to Californians’ lives,” Times reporters wrote in that 2021 investigation. So, as climate change makes extreme heat events more frequent and puts more and more Californians at risk, what is the state doing about it? Historically, not enough. The state’s official data accounted for just 599 deaths. A 2021 Times examination of state mortality data showed that heat probably caused about 3,900 deaths in the state between 20. ![]() While state officials make those forward projections, the official death toll over the past decade is likely a serious undercount. Counties with higher poverty rates are also highest on the scale of exposure and sensitivity. The California Department of Public Health has been working to assess how vulnerable each county in the state is to extreme heat, based on a variety of environmental and societal factors.įor example, counties with larger populations of non-English speakers are especially vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, due to what state health officials call “linguistic isolation.” That puts many Californians in L.A., Kern and other counties through the Central Valley at the most risk. It also has a greater impact on people who work predominantly outdoors, such as construction workers, landscapers and agricultural workers. And some people are more at risk than others.Įxtreme heat disproportionately affects children and the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, disabled people and those who are pregnant. I’ll spare you too many details on how heat kills, but it can happen through heat exhaustion or the more serious heatstroke - which can severely damage the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. and around the world facing the dangers of extreme heat and thousands dying each year, maybe it’s time to frame the risks more responsibly. With so many people in California, across the U.S. Personally, I’m striving to no longer use that phrase - with its tinge of cutesy fun that feels out of place - when writing about one of the deadliest seasonal weather events. Through this heat wave and many previous ones, government officials and media have shared now-familiar tips and resources to “beat the heat.” Then there was Death Valley National Park, where the thermometer hit a truly terrifying 128 degrees, breaking a daily record of 127 degrees reached in 20. ![]()

The next few days after launch, Orion will venture out to the moon, coming within 96 kilometres during its closest approach to the lunar surface on day six of the journey. NASA releases haunting audio of the ‘creepiest sound’ made by a black hole This maneuver will put Orion on a path to the moon. Shortly after that is the trans-lunar Injection burn when the ICPS boosts Orion’s speed from 28,163 kilometres per hour to 36,371 kilometres per hour to escape the pull of Earth’s gravity and set off for the moon.Īfter this burn, the ICPS will separate from Orion.Īround 6.30am AEST, Orion will make its first outbound trajectory correction burn using the European Service Module, which provides the spacecraft with power, propulsion and thermal control. The perigree raise manoeuvre will occur about 12 minutes after launch when the ICPS experiences a burn to raise Orion’s altitude so it doesn’t reenter the Earth’s atmosphere. The core stage of the rocket will separate about eight minutes later and fall toward the Pacific Ocean, allowing for Orion’s solar array wings to deploy. Journey to the moonĪfter liftoff, the solid rocket boosters will separate from the spacecraft about two minutes into the flight and splash down in the Atlantic Ocean, with other components also jettisoning shortly after. In the last few seconds, hydrogen will burn off, the four RS-25 engines will start, resulting in booster ignition and liftoff at T minus zero. Much of the action takes place in the final minute, as the ground launch sequencer sends the command for the rocket flight computer’s automated launching sequencer to take over about 30 seconds prior to launch. The launch director will poll the team to make sure that every station is “go” 15 minutes ahead of liftoff.Īt 10 minutes and counting, things kick into high gear as the spacecraft and rocket go through the final steps. A planned 30-minute countdown hold will start about 40 minutes before launch. Afterwards, the team will top off and replenish any of the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen that dissipates during the fuelling process.Ībout 50 minutes before launch, the final NASA test director briefing will occur. Credit: Joe Raedle /Getty Imagesįive hours before, the upper stage will begin fuelling. As the Artemis I rocket team prepared for the record-breaking mission, storm clouds threatened to postpone the launch. The team began fuelling the rocket’s core stage eight hours before launch. Late Sunday night into early Monday morning, the launch team conducted a briefing to discuss weather conditions and decide if they are “go” or “no go” to begin fuelling the rocket. The live countdown is well underway, with liftoff scheduled for around 12.30am AEST on Tuesday morning, for those watching from Australia. However, closer to the launch period those chances decrease to 60 per cent as the chance for scattered showers and storms increases. The weather is currently looking good for launch, with an 80 per cent chance of favourable weather, according to a US Space Force forecast on Sunday. “We will launch the world’s only spacecraft designed to carry humans into deep space, atop the most powerful rocket,” said NASA chief Bill Nelson. Sitting at the very top of the 32-storey-high rocket is the space capsule set to fly beyond the Moon and back again. The rocket will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 29 between 10.30pm and 12.30am AEST.Īlthough there is no human crew on board the mission, it’s the first step in the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon and eventually land them on Mars. Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus > ![]() ![]() Amplitude has taken on the complaints from the first game, but this has ended up automating so much of the action that your only significant involvement is in outfitting your ships before you start and picking some pre-baked tactics for the computer to follow.īut even that’s still better than normal, which leaves Endless Space 2 impressively bereft of serious faults. Like all Civilization style games, managing a large number of colonies can get very complicated once you’ve been playing for a few hours, but the computer is a very competent overseer if you want to start delegating the finer details and concentrate on the big picture.Īt a strategy level Endless Space 2 is excellent, but as always seems to happen with these games, the starship combat is considerably less gripping. All sci-fi strategy games suffer from the problem that instead of researching something as immediately understandable as a granary or a biplane you’re putting all your resources into Star Trek style technobabble like ‘Photon Distortion’ and ‘Baryonic Shielding’. This allows you greater freedom to specialise, but it’s a risky proposition if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. It all factors into the technology tree as well, which branches out in four specialised directions. This kind of internal bickering is unusual for the genre, but the way it’s handled is very absorbing and fairly realistic. There are multiple different groups within your own empire and each has an opposite number as industrialists argue with ecologists, scientists compete with religious groups, and so on. What is highly varied though is the politics, which may not sound like something to get excited about but really adds a lot to the game. ![]() We don’t see that as a serious problem though, as the alternative is to just make everyone more generic. And if they’re not very good scientists, for example, there’s not much you can do about it. And while the humans are very versatile most of the others have to be played in a certain way to be effective. The variation in races does have two unavoidable downsides, in that the game doesn’t just have one steep learning curve but eight. And even if you do get confused as to what something means the game’s help system is impressively easy to access, and informative without being long-winded.Įndless Space 2 (PC) – the aliens are very alien They’re properly alien races too, with capitalistic frogs, space vampires, insect hordes, interdimensional beings, clones, and more ensuring that switching races does more than just change a few of the graphics.ĭespite the necessary complexity of Endless Space’s menus and displays the interface is excellent throughout, with all the many icons proving to be cleverly distinctive and usually fairly obvious in function. Each of the races has their own story campaign, with their own unique goals and story beats, that put a lot more effort into plot and characterisation than you’d expect. But to its credit Endless Space 2 is none of those things, or at least not most of the time.ĭespite what you might imagine Endless Space 2 has a very simple concept to get your head around: you pick one of eight intergalactic races to play as and try to dominate the galaxy through diplomacy, economics, or war. That complexity comes at a price though, and they’re also often very dry and humourless games with a steep learning curve and no proper storytelling. And can't make my friends play this one, unfortunately. That makes it part of a sub-genre that Americans insist on calling a 4X game (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate), which are amongst the complex and engrossing strategy games around. I won't even bother to purchase a next ES game until there is coop confirmed in teams. How did people imagine coop here? by pretending we are in teams? by removing that ability from AI and have a so great advantage on them? I already mentioned that in the first Endless Space game, I can't bring my friends with me to play this, I need coop, and for that I need teams. ![]() I am sorry if I turn this in a negative way, but I am really bothered by this. Your options for coop are then limited and just as in a "pretend game". So you could still "cheat" and make an alliance during the game with your buddies just that the AI won't be in team. Despite numerous games of the genre with teams at the start (the whole Civilization series for instance), here you don't have that. When you start a new game, there is NO OPTION TO HAVE TEAMS. ![]() When you start a new game, you can decide to check the option to have empires start "All close to each other". I think the official answer can be really misleading. ![]() ![]() ![]() As noted by Lori in the opening remarks, there is still much to unpack and details to communicate on the many new business-related laws passed this Session, so rest assured MetroNorth will continue to inform members of important updates as available.
